Amazing weekend!

Told you I would blog soon! :)

This weekend was amazing! We went to LA to see our friends Sam, Jordan and their 7 month old Campbell. It was awesome! Since little Riley does not have a play mat yet, we tested her on Campbell's. She LOVED IT! She is constantly looking, observing and just exploring her new world. I thought a play mat would really help her just absorb all that is around her. And I was right! She was in heaven!

Even better than Riley loving the play mat, her and Campbell LOVED hanging out with each other. It was so cute! Its amazing that little babies can enjoy each other's company like they did.

Riley was great for her first road trip...what a blessing! Other than her amazing timing with her spit up reflex...she was great the entire trip :) We had a great trip with great company! Maybe another road trip is in our near future :) I will keep you posted!

Just being happy :)

Hi Blog world!
There has been a TON of milestones that has happened since the last update. First of all...it was Mother's Day! My first one! And what made it even better was that it was also Jaron's birthday! Sunday was great...Jaron had to work that morning :( But I did everything that I love to do! I got to hang out with Riley, clean the apartment, and take a walk around the neighborhood. It was really relaxing. When Jaron got home, we had amazing dinner thanks to Jaron, belive it or not!

Monday we went out to dinner with some friends to celebrate Jaron's birthday. It was great to see everyone and Little Riley was on her best behavior seeing how she knew it was her Daddy's birthday celebration! It really was an amazing weekend...we had SO much fun!

Little Riley is growing FAST! The weekend before was awesome too because she finally got to meet her Auntie Shannon and Grandad Forester! It was a beautiful Cinco De Mayo weekend which we spent mostly in PB (Pacific Beach). We had a great lunch and then spent some time just walking around on the beach enjoying the great day!

On another side note, Im super excited because my BFF Rachelle (she's amazing!) got me a hair straightener! I know that sounds stupid to some of you out there, but I have gone about 6 months without one! And take it from me, you really dont know how much you use something until its gone! Not only have I not had my hair done since WAY before I was pregnant with Riley, but not having straight hair was KILLING ME! But...I have an AMAZING BFF and she was totally thoughtful by getting me one.

That's pretty much it for now. I will try to keep up on blogging (like I always say). I will keep in touch because Im sure I will have a TON of stories from this coming up weekend. We are going to see Sam, Jordan and Campbell in LA! WOO HOO! We are all so excited! But until next time!

My Labor Story! :)

Sat March 24th, 2012

It started out as a normal day…sitting around the house as usual, being bored out of my mind. Her due date was only 3 days earlier but I was frustrated because I always had a feeling that she would come early. Nevertheless, a normal day from what I had thought. Around 11 AM, I started getting contractions. AWESOME! It was a great feeling to know she was coming soon. They started to intensify (but were never consistent) around 1 in the afternoon to the point where Jaron had called into work to let them know that he would not be coming in that night. About the time he would have started his shift, the contractions almost went away completely. Darn! Not Saturday night.

Sun March 25th, 2012

I was excited to wake up with contractions on this day! It was my Dad’s birthday and I thought it would be special he and the baby shared this special day. It was early when they started (I believe around 4AM). We called the birth center early and were there by 6 AM. There was another birth going on, so by the time we got to see a midwife, it was about 7. I was so excited…this could be it! However, after doing the exam, we discovered I was only dilated 4 centimeters. The midwife instructed us to go home, walk around and try to jump start labor naturally. So that’s what we did. We went on several walks around the neighborhood that day. It was a beautiful day, so why not? Jaron didn’t have to work that night, but he did have to run a couple errands. So while he was gone, I danced and sang around the house to distract myself from the bad contractions. Yes…I danced to Britney and Beyonce and it was AWESOME! Not only did I feel energized, but I knew that every time I danced, the closer Riley was going to be born.

Even though I was doing my best to jump start labor, it wasn’t good enough. My contractions started becoming less and less powerful and further apart. What did I have to do to get this baby out?!? With that said, we decided that we stay home that night and see what would happen in the morning.

Mon. March 26th, 2012

The next day…grrrrr! I was frustrated another day had gone by. BUT I did wake up to contractions early in the morning! So…off to the birth center again to see what was going on. Can you guess how much I was dilated? That’s right…4 centimeters! After all that work already put in! It was around 7 in the morning when we went in and Susan (a midwife at the center) suggested going on a long walk. We did…for about two hours. It was painful! I just wanted to sit down through the contractions but we were venturing about 2 miles away from the center…we had to get back. It was cold, too and we wanted to get inside soon! When we got back to the center, Susan had left and Rachel was there instead. She examined me and I was STILL was 4 centimeters! Holy Cow!! I was so frustrated and tired that I just broke down in tears. It was so upsetting to hear that with all the work put in (and with the lack of sleep), that it still wasn’t good enough. Rachel gave me a hug and gave us some suggestions to help us and sent us home. Several hours later (I think around 7pm at this point) I received a call from Rachel to see how I was doing. She was helpful and told us to call whenever. We did end up calling her back around 9:30 to let her know we were coming in because finally contractions were powerful and closer together. And would you have guessed? I was STILL dilated 4 centimeters. Talk about being in shock! Here I was thinking that after two days that I would have some progression. I wasn’t thinking 9 centimeters or anything, but still!! What did I have to do?! Knowing how drained I was, Rachel suggested Ambien to help me sleep and to help jump contractions in the morning. So…we got the prescription and got home. I took a bath, ate and just tried to take it easy. Another day had gone by and still no baby.

Tues March 27th, 2012

I didn’t get much sleep that night. Not from excitement or emotions or anything. But from major CONTRACTIONS! WOO HOO! We headed down to the birth center with the mentality that this still may not be the time. We prepared to have our back-up plan in action in case I still had not progressed. But when we had my cervix examined, we learned I was 7 centimeters! FINALLY! I started to cry again because I was just so overwhelmed! Today was the day my daughter was going to be born!

We took all of our things in the bedroom upstairs and started to prepare for active labor. It was about 9 in the morning when we set up. Now, I will not go into details about the labor not because it isn’t interesting, but because it was a long and draining process. I was dancing, singing, walking, climbing stairs, sitting on the balance ball, bathing…you name it. I was doing my best to get this baby out. I wasn’t eating full meals (and really hadn’t been the last few days) because my contractions were taking over. So, between the lack of sleep and food, I was running low on energy. I was frustrated because of the slow progression of labor. And most importantly, I was feeling defeated. It had been 3 days of contractions, pain and anxiety. I was pooped!

It was around 9:30 in the evening when Susan sat me down and asked me what I was afraid of. I was kind of taken back by the question, but it was needed. What WAS I afraid of? Maybe it was the pain. But it wasn’t. I knew pain was inevitable. Maybe it was because I was at the birth center for 12 hours and still no baby. Who knows? Nevertheless, we had come to the conclusion that it wasn’t fear that was halting my labor, but the lack of energy and my lack of confidence that the baby was coming at all. Jaron and I discussed with each other and concluded that going to the hospital was the best option. It had been 3 long, draining days and I just needed rest and to get the baby out. It wasn’t what I wanted at ALL but I knew that I needed to do what was best for my baby. What was interesting about my mental state at this point was that I actually physically slowed my labor down. That’s right. Right before we had made that decision, I was contracting almost every two minutes. From the time it took to make the decision to the time I sat down in the hospital bed (about an hour), I had only had maybe 5 contractions at most. My body needed the rest and it was SO obvious!

We arrived at the hospital around 10:45 that night and I was SO excited to be there! The hospital had already discussed with Susan that their plan for me was to get me an epidural and Pitocin right away and after the week I had…I was really looking forward to it! The epidural…HORRIBLE! Besides the back pain from labor earlier, the epidural was the worst pain that day! But after it was in, I was a happy camper. I went from feeling every single pain to wondering if that itch in my pelvic area was another contraction. I was almost immediately hungry after the epidural was in, but hospital rules restricted meals during labor. Oh well…at this point, it was just a waiting game until I was 10 centimeters.

Wed. March 28th, 2012

I kept looking at the clock second by second hoping another day would not go by so that it could finally be her birthday. I was SO exhausted and winded that I just wanted the whole thing to be over with. But as the minute hand pasted midnight, I came-to, thinking that this was meant to be. March 28th…her birthday.

I thought that with the epidural in that it would be within an hour that she would be delivered. But to my amazement, even at 9 centimeters, it would still take me a while to deliver. With my research, personal beliefs and background with the natural childbirth community, I always vowed that if for whatever reason I needed pain medication, that I would not abuse or overuse it. Anyone who knows me knows that I barely take anything as it is even for the worse pain. However, under the circumstances, I was in need for a personal intervention: just get this baby out regardless. I kept hitting the epidural button every time I started to feel my feet again (horrible, I know!). But I wanted to have all the energy I had left to push.

I don’t remember what time Jaron said he saw her head, but I knew I didn’t want to see it. I already told my body to stop contractions earlier; I didn’t want my body to be discouraged by what little I could see (considering I was feeling more). It was painful, yes. But the epidural helped SO much! It wasn’t nearly as bad as the worse contraction I had at the birth center. With all my pushing, I was feeling tired, discouraged and emotional because she wasn’t here yet. But soon enough, she was out enough for Megan (our RN) to call for the doctor. All of a sudden, there was a crowded room of people getting ready for her. The doctor prepped me, instructing me to push for a matter of time, but not to scream (ya, right!). Before I realized it, POP! Little Riley Beth was in the world! I was so tired and was upset that I didn’t hear her, but once I heard that first cry, I cried myself too! There were three babies in the room because Jaron was feeling the same emotions too.

It was 4:12 AM and it was worth it. All this pain, agony and frustrations were WORTH it! I am so happy and proud of myself for how I did. Even though it wasn’t the natural birth I wanted, it was the way little Riley wanted to be born…her own special way. Jaron, too. Without him, none of this could have been possible. It was four days of constant disappointment, exhaustion and heartbreak. And he was there for each and every second of it. He was there holding my hand, helping me scream and offered help every time he could. It was draining on him, too and I love that he was there to help me through my moments the whole time. Now, we have little Riley in our lives and we couldn’t be any happier. :)

18 Lessons of Marriage

Howdy Strangers!
Sorry its been a few days since my last post. Busy going back home for Christmas, starting a new (temporary) job and just preparing for baby Benitez. :) For whatever reason, God has put on my heart to really set a good foundation of marriage before the little one arrives. Not to say that our marriage is being compromised by any means, but marriage is never perfect, therefore we should always continually work on it. I find this funny only because you would think I would want to read all about parenting right now! :) Anywho...I stumbled upon a great blog by Pastor Mark Driscoll and his wife, Grace who have been married for 18 years. (Pastor Mark Driscoll is the pastor of Mars Hill out of Seattle...a church in which I LOVE listening to sermons and reading blogs from their website) This was the advice from his wife, Grace, which I thought might be helpful to some of you ladies out there :)

Grace’s 18 Lessons

  1. Make time with Jesus your first priority, husband second priority.
  2. Be intimate often.
  3. Be willing to have hard and honest conversations, and pray for Jesus to make them fruitful.
  4. Pray for wisdom often.
  5. The enemy is always ready to divide you during trials. Don’t let him; cling to Jesus and each other.
  6. Forgive, forgive, forgive, forgive …
  7. Don’t enable his sin, but pray for wisdom in timing and words, and be respectful when addressing it.
  8. Be a woman of inner and outer beauty.
  9. Make your home a place of retreat and rest.
  10. Study your husband, appreciate, value and respect him, especially when you don’t “feel” like it.
  11. HAVE FUN.
  12. Pray against lies. Memorize the truth of scripture.
  13. Spend regular, meaningful time together. Invest in the relationship.
  14. Don’t let bitterness set in if you are hurt or frustrated; dig up the root and pray it through.
  15. Be an attentive and available listener.
  16. Be teachable and willing to submit.
  17. Set your heart and body toward your husband and don’t let either wander.
  18. Repent often and allow trustworthy people to speak into your lives.

Stuff Im thankful for...

Thanksgiving is around the corner and I always like to make note as to what I am thankful for. This year...its kinda odd. (I wouldnt lie about this :) ) This year Im thankful for two things: Occupy Wall Street and Tim Tebow. Let me explain:

As my close family and friends know...I studied political science and history in college. I LOVED it! The one thing I took from it is that anything and everything is worth fighting for. I mean, all throughout history we have these incredible American icons that have really put their life out on the line for what they believed was fair. The one thing about this subject in college that always bothered me, is that my generation had NOTHING to fight for. It was kinda sad. I mean, we had our parents (the baby boomers) on either side of the Vietnam War and they also had  the opportunity to fight for equal rights for women and African Americans. Our grandparents witnessed two world wars and amazing inventions were being made left and right. I really felt that our generation was SPOILED. We had everything handed to us with a golden spoon. This year, it really makes me happy that this generation is fighting for something that is for the greater good. Im not trying to say I am necessarily for or against the protest right now...but hey...at least their protesting, right??

Now on to Tim Tebow. In this crazy, hectic, superficial world of entertainment we have idols such as the Kardashian family and Katy Perry to boost our children's inner confidence within themselves. WOW, really? That is what entertainment has come to. Its even worse in sports. With all the trash talking and lock outs with the "who-said-what-to-who"s...its like the guy's version of People magazine. We try to incorporate sports in schools to BUILD children's confidence, not to encourage trash talking of any kind. Then there is Tim Tebow. Now, Im not entirely a fan of his stats or even the "Tim Tebow effect" but there is something about this guy that is incredibly refreshing. Finally a person who can set a GOOD example of what good sportsmanship is like. Not only that, but he is the only self proclaimed Christian that ACTUALLY puts GOD FIRST! What a concept that is! (That was sarcastic, but true!) Tim Tebow really has put me in check about what I do and what GOD ALLOWS ME TO DO. Have you seen interviews for this guy after a game? The commentators will ask how the game went and Mr. Tebow will always give God credit first and foremost. How humbling is that? It is SO good to know that there is someone out there in the world of sports that knows that it really could be over tomorrow...but thats ok cause God is always on your side! Love it!

I told you...those are odd things to be thankful for. But I am truly glad to see changes in the world around me. Its things like these that I am so humbled and thankful for all the little things in life that God has blessed me with. Have a great week everyone!

Baby Benitez!

Baby Benitez! (Taken at 8 weeks)

Long time no see!

So I really wanted to be this blog FREAK and I guess it never panned out that way...but Im gonna try this again. Seeing how life has just gotten more interesting...I figured its a way that I can show how happy and blessed I am to be in the position that I am in!
That "more interesting" aspect to the Benitez family: WE ARE PREGNANT! Its amazing all the blessings that come together over such a small individual :). We are truly grateful of the out pour of love and support from friends and family over the last few months.
For now, its a boy (what I thought it was all along) but we are not certain because this little person decided to show off its butt during the most important ultrasound! But keep posted...we will update the certainty of the gender soon enough.
So...I want to keep up on this so I will keep posts short and sweet for now. Until next time digital world!!

Happy Holidays!

I am SO spoiled! Being in a great apartment, a great area, great husband, dog and friends and family. There are, however, those who arnt so lucky and wont be spending the holiday season with the people they love. Our military (whatever the side of the fence you are about the current situation) are overseas without the comforts of home. I just cannot imagine what it is like to be in a foreign country on Christmas night without loved ones by your side. It just makes me feel so bless to be around amazing things that only GOD alone has provided for me. Let's also mention the families that cannot afford even a decent meal, let alone a decent Christmas for their children. How excited were you as a child to wake up on Christmas day and find that Santa had all those amazing presents waiting for you? Well...some kids wake up with the same excitement, yet quickly become overwhelmed by the reality that Santa never came, or will ever come. I just ask that we all help out just ONE person during the holidays. Pay it forward! A present might be worth a lot, but a smile on someone's face is PRICELESS! Merry Christmas everyone!

If I die young....

"If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a, bed of roses
Sink me in the river, at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

Lord make me a rainbow, I'll shine down on my mother
She'll know I'm safe with you when she stands under my colors, oh and
Life ain't always what you think it ought to be, no
Ain't even grey, but she buries her baby

The sharp knife of a short life, well
I've had, just enough time"

Two weeks ago, I went to a funeral for one of my old co-workers. Since then...this song has been haunting me on the radio. I have been thinking since then how short life is; and I can speak for us all when I say that most people tend to take that for granted. God blesses us a life on earth for a reason...whether you live until age 5 or age 95; we cant take for granted what He gave to us. Although we do not want to see our loved ones die young, there is a reason for it. I have ultimately come to the conclusion that if I die young, I would LOVE to say "I have had just enough time". Meaning, I really hope my short life on earth was well worth it to someone. I hope that I can say that my life's accomplishments were measured by how many people I have touched, not by personal vanities. Although this is a grim message, I hope that in the end it can be seen in a positive light. Because in the end, life isnt about how many breaths you take but the moments that take your breath away.

Live life to the fullest bloggers...I pray that I do! :)

Let's see...

Tonight we will see if Prop 19 will pass. For all you non-Californians... this one is huge. To legalize pot or not. That is the question! Thoughts, prayers, opinions?? Oh, and we are voting on a new governer too. :) No more governator. He will be missed...but the question at hand...Lets see if Prop 19 will go over. I will keep updates on this soon :)
